Meanwhile in Miralai…

Emory watched the grass speed upward to meet him, brushing the soles of his shoes before arcing downward and away again, as if repeatedly creating a mirror image of itself. The tree creaked with his swinging. At the apex of each swoop, his line of vision was high enough such that nothing was visible to him but the expanse of the ocean. This made his stomach drop in a way that was both uncomfortable and worth repeating. Abby moved next to him in a more gentle, controlled way, something like a blue orchid mid-breeze. She wore a red sundress and had pinned a Miralain version of that aforementioned sort in her hair, as she often did. “Emory, I want to ask you something, will you stop swinging for a second?” She spoke the words in a very broken start-and-stop way, timing each one with the bottom curve of Emory’s swinging to increase the likelihood of him hearing her. He eventually came to a stop and turned toward Abby. “Do you think, if we hadn’t grown up here, together, on Miralai, that we would have somehow met one another?” She asked. “No, probably not!” Emory leaned back to kick and restart his swinging. Abby rolled her eyes. “Come on, engage with me, give me your real answer!” Emory stopped swinging again, looking at her more seriously this time. “If we had never met, how would I know to go and meet you? But since we know each other, now, if we were to somehow un-meet, I would make sure to re-meet you in any case!” Abby watched him swinging again and wondered if what he had said meant anything at all.

Emory’s note / Behind the song

This song is an interesting one to come from me, specifically, because I really am not a fan of the “multiverse” idea that seems super popular at the moment! Not to say that any of the particular pieces of media doing “many universe” things are “bad,” on the contrary, I have enjoyed a lot of them (Spiderverse, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Rick and Morty (cringe, I know, but wonderful once upon a time)). But I have some philosophical bone to pick. Though the multiverse idea is, in my mind, strictly superior to the Simulation idea, which I find to be boring and an obvious bleeding-over of the cultural computer era. I am much more interested in the idea of there being one world, one life, one set of opportunities, one path to walk and make the best out of. (And by interested in, I of course mean “believing in its correctness,” but that also makes it more interesting). And the “in every world” refrain is definitely reminiscent in some ways of the “multiverse” concept, but I was thinking of it more at the time of writing as a less literal “world” and as an answer to a kind of hypothetical question. In any extreme scenario, many of which can and will come about in this reality, I will find you. I will always have your back, I will always seek you out in order to try and put your best interests at heart. And, in some insane wacky situation where I have hotdog fingers and we don’t know each other, my consciousness now, in whatever capacity it exists, would be yelling at the “other me” to go and find you. For my sake, if not also hopefully for yours.

Lyrics

There’s nothing longer than a week I wanted to be good That falls apart and stretches Like we said it never would I won’t go my separate way But if you choose to turn The world will wash the bluest gray In loneliest sojourn In every world I will find you In every world I will find you In every world I will find you And hold you close to heart I kick my feet in front of me I’m letting down my guard And living in your noticings Of the the wonderfully bizarre In every world I will find you In every world I will find you In every world I will find you And hold you close to heart (I will find you) (find you)

Chords, how-to-play

First, a point of technicality: the song was sped up from 100bpm to 101.2 bpm after recording, which raises the pitch by 20.65 cents, meaning that the version on Spotify etc. is not in a standard key and will sound slightly out of tune with instruments tuned to 440hz. (The instrumental and vocal files linked in this package are not varispeeded, so they will work to play along with, or you can tune the .WAV down 20.65 cents, or tune your instrument up, but that would be a lot of trouble!) The song is underpinned by the main synth riff, which is: Bb Eb F Bb (Eb in the bass) alternating with G D Eb Ab (Ab in the bass) In complicated terms, these are, respectively, I(add9, no3) and IVmaj7(#11, no3) In useful terms, the whole song is essentially a vamp that is colored by the extension notes: Eb <—> Abmaj7 I <—> IVmaj7 So if you wanted to play it more simply, alternating between those two chords would probably make the most sense. On guitar, I think that would look like x68866 and xx68810
