Wind whistled over the open prairie plateau. The moss and ferns, thick and abundant as they were, did little to dampen the reflections of towering crags that surrounded our small duo. The ocean could be heard washing in and out. “How long, Emory, do you think, until we make it through The Outskirts? My legs are small, and it’s been days!” Tamuu flopped dramatically onto the ground, rolling into a furry pile before sticking his tongue out and playing dead. Emory laughed. “Not too much longer, now, my friend.” He tossed a small stone up into the air and caught it again. He had pocketed it near the beginning of their journey, and found comfort in the action. The Outskirts loomed interminably. Emory did not want Tamuu to know that his previously stated “not too much longer” was more hopeful than reality-founded, and he silently wondered if it might be weeks until they managed to return to Miralai’s center. Uncertain rumors of creatures amidst The Outskirts bubbled up to his attention. He shook his head as if to rid it of these thoughts.
The Outskirts is about feeling lost, and it is a sort of downer song in that way, but it has an inherent hope within it, I think? A hope, and perhaps more importantly than that, a willingness to accept hope. The song feels as if it is coming from a place of wanting to embrace optimism about the future, and that somehow an embracing of that optimism involves a setting aside of the self. Which, though I am in many ways a champion of the “individual,” and of all “individuals,” is I think one of the most fundamental sources of life. I have to stop thinking about myself so much, so that I can think about others, and so that I can replace excessive (obsessive) introspection with actually doing things! (The doing of which, in theory, will bring benefit both to myself and to others!) There is always a path forward, but you must walk it!
